South Africa’s sport industry came together for the fourth Discovery Sport Industry Awards, celebrating brands, agencies, sponsorships and events on a glamorous evening at the Sandton Convention Centre.
Hosted by Dan for the first time, the awards drew a crowd that included former Bafana, Springbok and Proteas captains in Lucas Radebe, John Smit and Graeme Smith, as well as Olympic gold medallists Cameron van der Burgh and Penny Heyns, Springboks Robbi Kempson and Flip van der Merwe, and World Cup winner Joost van der Westhuizen, whose appearance in a wheelchair to receive the Deloitte Lifetime Contribution to Sport Award made for the night’s most emotional moment.
Dan was part of the judging panel that decided on the night’s awards, that included a second consecutive ‘Best Sport Participation Award’ for the Absa Cape Epic, EFC winning ’Sport Brand of the Year’, and adidas winning awards for their Old Mutual Two Oceans and Orlando Pirates sponsorships. For a third year running, Playmakers walked away with ‘Agency of the Year’.
With an audience of 1 200 people attending, this was again the defining night out for the sport industry, with the Sport Industry Group South Africa orchestrating a spectacular night of celebration.
