Formerly a sports journalist, having served as both sports editor at leading website iafrica.com and sports anchor on radio station Cape Talk, Dan has a strong background across all sports, and this has allowed him to become involved in events across the sporting spectrum.
Highlights include hosting the inaugural South African Sport Industry Summit in 2012, with guests including Danny Jordaan, Imtiaz Patel, Irvin Khoza and Jurie Roux. Dan also served as a facilitator at the Beyond Sport summit in Cape Town in 2011, where Tony Blair headlined the guest speakers.
Dan worked alongside Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and former France captain Marcel Desailly with Castrol during the 2010 World Cup, entertaining Castrol’s global clients in South Africa as the tournament played out. As a former Champions League presenter on etv and stadium announcer with Ajax Cape Town, and a presenter for Coca Cola’s FIFA World Cup trophy tour, Dan has an established passion for the beautiful game.
In 2013, Dan was appointed Vodacom’s ‘Fanbassador’ for their sponsorship of the Super Rugby competition, a role involving radio interviews, social media activation and match attendance in support of the Vodacom Super Rugby season, and the fan initiatives included therein, as well as the official launch event of the season.
A former rugby commentator with radio station Cape Talk, Dan has hosted a dinner in Hong Kong with All Black flyhalf Dan Carter ahead of the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa, worked with Investec and the Wallabies at a private client evening, and hosted the All Blacks on several occasions in partnership with adidas. Dan has also hosted Captain Morgan’s Legends of Currie Cup launch events, and has worked with many of the rugby world’s biggest names at functions both in South Africa and abroad.
He is also the host of the Cape Town Tens rugby tournament, a two-day festival of rugby that brings together star players, big-name bands, and a celebration of running rugby. Dan has also hosted corresponding events in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.
A past contributor to both Wisden and Cricinfo magazines, Dan has hosted Cricket South Africa’s season launch, and has also handled several of KFC’s mini-cricket launch events. Dan also served as MC at Castle Lager’s 100 Test match tribute to Makhaya Ntini and the Jacques Kallis Foundation golf day, and previously worked as the stadium announcer at Newlands cricket ground.
Dan is also heavily involved in mountain biking, having worked on eight of the ten Absa Cape Epic races to date, covering both events on the actual race as part of the on-course commentary team, and the evening dinner and prize-giving for each stage, as well as gala dinners, media launches and rider events across South Africa in the build-up to the annual race, and has worked closely with mountain bike world champion Christoph Sauser on events for cycling charity songo.info.
In other sporting arenas, Dan has co-hosted the South African Swimming Awards with Carol Manana, as well as the South African leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup in Durban. He is the MC at BMW’s International Polo Series, has twice hosted Vodacom’s 10-day Beach Africa festival in Durban, and for six years hosted the Sharks Celebrity Marquee at the Vodacom Durban July. He has also served as MC at the prestigious L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate in Cape Town, hosted Powerade’s stand at the Two Oceans Marathon expo, and hosted the South African Snowboarding Championships.

All our guests were full of compliments; locally we’ve been receiving e-mails and text messages congratulating us on the event “once again it’s been the talk of the town”. Thanks for taking part and I hope that you will be on board once again next year.”

“Thanks for your MC work last weekend at the Cape Town Tens – it wouldn’t have been the same without you. You are the ultimate professional and an absolute pleasure to work with.”
– Kirsti Lyall, KLPR
“The high quality of the Beyond Sport Summit and Awards in Philadelphia was very much due to the friendly, knowledgeable and eloquent skill of Dan Nicholl as one of the primary moderators. He has the perfect mix of humour, thoughtfulness, and journalist curiosity that keeps every panel and interview he facilitates interesting and relevant. He seems to always be a step head, making for entertaining and insightful content. No matter where in the world we hold our events, Dan will always be one of our first calls.”
